Ave Maria University Basketball Builds Momentum
Ave Maria University’s men’s basketball program is having a strong run under Head Coach Jamon Copeland, who returned to lead the team in 2024. With a 24–4 record, the Gyrenes recently earned a share of the Sun Conference regular season title and continue to gain attention both locally and beyond.
Copeland originally launched the program in 2009 and quickly built it into a competitive team, increasing wins from 14 in its first season to 23 the next. After time away leading other programs, he’s picked up where he left off. “We have a really supportive student base here, and that makes a difference,” Copeland said.
This season’s results reflect a consistent approach. The team has remained competitive in conference play and secured an at-large bid to the NAIA Tournament, along with a conference tournament title during his tenure.
Copeland points to team culture as a key factor. “You have a group of students willing to do whatever is needed for the team,” he said. That mindset shows up in their style of play, which focuses on defensive pressure and constant movement on offense—something that requires both conditioning and buy-in from players.
Assistant Coach Mike Esposito, who joined the staff in 2025, echoed that sentiment. “It’s a strong program with players who work hard and compete,” he said. He also noted the overall environment around the team, from long road trips to everyday practices, as part of what makes the experience stand out.
Beyond basketball, Ave Maria University continues to see success across its athletic programs, including rugby and ultimate frisbee. The university’s ultimate team recently posted a standout season and is expected to rank among the top Division III teams nationally.
With steady leadership and a clear system in place, the basketball program is positioned to remain competitive. For now, the focus stays on maintaining consistency and building on the progress already made.
